Dental Implants: Age is but a Number

Dental Implants Baton Rouge LA dentist Dr. Barksdale explains to patients that anyone, no matter their age, can qualify for dental implants with the proper supplemental procedures.

The only thing that holds patients back from receiving successful dental implants is the physical state of their jawbone and gum tissue, not their age. For some reason, people are under the impression that elderly people cannot qualify for dental implants due to “old age” or “brittle tooth bones” but this is not the case. Certainly patients that have smoked for 35 years or had previous alcohol abuse issues, may create more complicated issues for the procedure, almost every patient should be able to qualify for dental implantation with the proper supplemental procedures.

The procedures to which we are referring to are the bone graft and soft tissue augmentation procedures. Both of these surgeries allow patients to increase their chances to qualify for successful dental implantation through the reconstruction of the gum and jawbone tissue.

A bone graft is a bone tissue transplant in which the dentist replaces the fractured or damaged bone with new and healthy osseous tissue to regain strength in the oral area. This is somewhat of a complex procedure where the dentist either extracts excess tissue from the patient’s hip, chin or other area or decides to utilize donor or healthy animal bone. The jawbone is placed into the jaw area and over the span of 3-4 months, the bone naturally integrates into the patient’s mouth and is able to function just as well, if not better, than the patient’s original jawbone. It is imperative that patients follow the dentist’s strict instructions throughout this process, to accelerate the healing process.

A soft tissue augmentation is necessary when the patient has suffered from severe damage in the gum area and lacks the adequate amount of tissue needed for the dental implant procedure. During this procedure, the dentist will either extract excess tissue from the roof of the mouth or use donor bone to place in the gum area and rebuild the oral region naturally. This small surgery is far less taxing than the bone graft and only requires a few days to a week to recover from.

Why Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the best tooth loss solution for patients of all ages due to their biocompatible and non decay material, natural fusion, protection from gum diseases, and their ability to increase tooth density. Through a process called osseointegration, the dental implants naturally bind inside the patient’s jawbone in order to function and perform just as well, if not better, than the patient’s original teeth. This allows the patient a comfortable experience biting, chewing, speaking and especially smiling, that other tooth loss solutions could not even come close to providing.

Patients of every age have the ability to qualify for all three of these procedures to regain and restore their oral and dental health for years to come.
