A Very Hoppy St. Patrick’s Day

It’s officially March and you know what that means – spring time is just around the corner. However, despite how excited Baton Rouge, LA dental implant provider Dr. Barksdale and the rest of his staff at Barksdale Dentistry are about seeing the season change, there is one more reason March makes us smile – St. Patrick’s day. Now you might be wondering why a dentist’s office is excited about an Irish holiday most often times celebrated by drinking copious amounts of beer. Well, it has to do with just that – Beer! Numerous studies are surfacing that prove one of the main ingredients in beer – hops – has antimicrobial properties. This means that the occasional drink of beer can actually give you more than one reason to smile.

However, in order to fully understand why this discovery is so interesting, you must first know a little about the history of beer and the way in which merchants discovered they could make it last longer.

Let’s take a closer look.

Hops Helped Beer Make It Across the Pond

A few hundred years ago the business of sending tradable goods to distant shores via oceanic voyage was a booming business. Spices, meats, fruits, and veggies were all popular items on trade routes. However, one of the greatest challenges that faced merchants in these times was how to make sure their merchandise did not spoil along its journey. Salt and sugar were used to preserve various foods and wine were kept in the dark, cool underbellies of trade ships.

However, beer was a different story. The yeast in beer soon proved to be a large problem in terms of causing the beverage to spoil before reaching its destination. Bacteria would flourish in the barrels’ beer was transported in and by the time the ships reached the shore, more often than not the beer had turned and was not suitable for sale.

Now, as you might imagine, this became a major problem for merchants in the beer trade and the idea of taking the yeast out of beer recipes was not plausible. Many different brewers tried various tactics to preserve beer and it was soon discovered that batches of beer made with more hops were capable of surviving long sea voyages without spoiling. In no time at all, an increase in hops was soon a staple in almost all beer recipes and because of this beer has that hoppy taste many people have come to know and love.

The above facts soon led modern-day researchers to discover that hops have antimicrobial properties in them. This means that they are capable of hindering bacteria growth. due to this, the occasional beer can actually be quite good for your teeth.
